Kyoto Film Pitching

Taking advantage of being a center of period drama production, Kyoto has set up Kyoto Film Pitching to help young creators succeed internationally. They accept submissions of period film and historical drama proposals. Prominent movie industry professionals select a few works from the proposals. After a presentation during the Kyoto Film Pitching contest, they choose the best project for real-life filming at Uzumasa studio. The best work receives a filming right for a pilot short film, which has the equivalent value of 3.5 million Japanese yen.

Kyoto International Manga Anime Award

The Kyoto International Manga Anime Fair (KYOMAF) was held with the hope of supporting the creative industries by providing a place where creators from around the world could share their work despite the effects of the Covid-19 disaster, which has limited the economic activities of many countries.

The Kyoto International Manga Anime Award established an illustration division in 2019, and a CG animation division was added in 2020, strengthening this prestigious award, which now consists of three divisions: manga, illustration, and CG animation. In 2022, we received a record number of 2,261 entries from 99 regions and countries around the world. By creating opportunities for aspiring manga artists and other creators from around the world to make their professional debut in Kyoto, the contest aims to discover and nurture creators with diverse talents.

ndjc（New Directions in Japanese Cinema）

【ndjc】

New Directions in Japanese Cinema (ndjc) is a project that aims to discover and nurture young Japanese filmmakers. Four promising filmmakers who are selected by the quality of their original scenario and workshops, produce 30-minute short films with professional staff. The completed films will be open to the public and some will be shown at overseas film festivals.

【Support for Feature film planning and screenplay development】

Under the guidance of a producer, a film director, and a screenwriter, talented young filmmakers are supported in planning and script development of their original works and the production of pilot films. They also have an opportunity to present their projects to film industry professionals.

VIPO Academy

VIPO Academy offers an original educational program which has been designed to nurture future leaders in the content industry. We offer various courses by role, level, subject, and theme.

A network of students who have learned together across different content genres provide an exciting trigger for new business ideas.

VIPO Academy started in 2015 and has six courses in total. As of July 1st, 2022, 744 people from 131companies participated in the VIPO Academy.

1．Corporate Leader Course

The program for this course offers an opportunity for project leaders to transform into corporate leaders and executives in the entertainment and content industry.

2．Project Leader Course

This course transforms individuals into project leaders who can manage people around them and lead them toward success in the content industry.

3．Global Business Course

By participating in the lectures in Japanese and English, participants learn to act appropriately in any business situation and strengthen their global business skills.

4．Essential Legal Knowledge Course

Participants learn essential legal knowledge for the content industry that will help to prevent contract-related problems.

5．Essential Financial Knowledge Course

Participants learn essential financial knowledge for professionals working in the content industry so they can perform their tasks with greater awareness of the company’s financial situation and project’s budget.

6．Industry Researching Basic Course

Participants study different genres in the contents industry, along with their markets and business models. By researching successful business cases in each genre, participants learn the ways to develop content transcending genre boundaries.

VIPO Film Lab

“VIPO Film Lab” is a place to train industry professionals such as producers, directors, and screenwriters who have a global perspective and can play an active role in Japan and overseas. VIPO is offering various training courses for each purpose such as practical training, workshops, online courses, etc.

[1] Script Development Course @ Udine

The scriptwriting session in Udine is for bringing your existing scripts up to an international standard. It is an intensive one-on-one session with an experienced lecturer who has an active profile in Europe.

[2] International Producer’s Course

In this course, you will learn about the functions of film festivals and markets around the world, the roles of sales agents and project markets, and take practical lectures from the person in charge of the actual markets and script development sessions in order to become an active producers internationally. The course is designed to provide the comprehensive knowledge that is necessary for international co-production and overseas development of films. With experienced industry experts and active players from Japan and abroad as lecturers, the course aims to provide producers with basic knowledge and techniques that can be immediately applied in practice.
